New boat taxi service in Phuket: Direct connection to dream beaches!

Phuket, the popular tourist destination in Thailand, has launched a new boat taxi service that connects the airport directly to the island's stunning west coast resorts. Bookings will be available through official tourism channels or Phuket Airport transport services, and further information on schedules and prices will be provided in advance of launch.

Improving infrastructure

But that's not all! The new boat taxi initiative is part of a larger plan to improve public transport infrastructure on the island. A memorandum of understanding (MOU) was signed on September 12, 2025 to enable the implementation of this project.

The planned pilot line will stretch around 16.7 nautical miles from Sirinat National Park to Patong Beach, with the boat ride offering a comfortable travel time of around 40 minutes, compared to up to three hours by car during peak hours. To ensure the safety and efficiency of trips, all boats are equipped with the latest technology such as AIS tracking and GPS. There is also a focus on protecting the environment, especially with regard to sea turtle nesting areas and minimizing ecological disruption.

Sustainability in focus

Like the information from Watson show, Phuket attracts millions of tourists every year - between January and June 2025 there were around 5.8 million visitors. Road congestion and the environmental impact of overtourism pose a major challenge. The boat taxi project could represent an important step in promoting sustainable tourism by effectively using waterways and providing an environmentally friendly alternative to traditional means of transport.

In the pilot phase, two boats will be used, each with space for eight passengers and traveling at a speed of 12 km/h. Those interested can easily book the boats via an app, and the cost is expected to be around 60 baht (approx. 1.60 euros) per trip.
