Phu Quoc: New airline boom makes island a tourism star!
The picturesque island of Phu Quoc, located off the coast of Vietnam, has developed rapidly in recent years and plans to become one of Southeast Asia's leading tourist destinations. In an impressive move, the new airline Sun PhuQuoc Airways was launched in November 2025, which is expected to significantly boost air traffic on the island. Travel and Tour World reports that this airline has already carried its first passengers from November 1st and is part of a comprehensive strategy by Sun Group, which controls the entire tourism value chain in Phu Quoc.
“Sun PhuQuoc Airways aims to promote commercial passenger transportation and charter flights for tourists,” explains Anita, a local business manager. This commitment, which is also underpinned by the support of Vietnamese government authorities, is particularly important to improve accessibility to the island, which attracted over 7.5 million visitors last year - an increase of 4.7 percent compared to the previous year.
Planned expansion and infrastructure
With the fleet set to expand from a planned eight aircraft in 2025 to almost 100 by 2030, the airline aims to offer not only national but also international connections. The Aeronews Journal highlights that the initial investments of VND2.5 trillion (approximately US$98.81 million) will be financed through both equity and debt. The fleet will include both narrow- and wide-body aircraft, helping to diversify the offering.
Furthermore, Phu Quoc International Airport will be expanded to a capacity of 20 million passengers annually to meet future tourism requirements. These expansions are of great importance for the upcoming APEC event in 2027, for which the island aims to distinguish itself as an international economic and tourist center. Vietnam.vn reports that large projects, such as the congress center and modern transport infrastructure, are already being planned.
Ecological sustainability and future-oriented strategies
Phu Quoc is not only a place for beach vacationers, but also aims to become a recognized ecotourism destination. Activities that focus on sustainable tourism are becoming increasingly important. The island is committed to greening and diversifying its tourism offerings, including medical tourism, luxury resort tourism and water sports. With appropriate cooperation between tourism companies, new markets such as South Korea, China and Europe are actively targeted.
With its integrated tourism strategy, Sun Group promises to elevate Phu Quoc to the same level as other popular destinations such as Bali and Phuket in the coming years. Resident island life, characterized by high quality of life and socio-economic progress, remains a key concern for citizens.
In summary, with its new airline, extensive infrastructure projects and focus on sustainable tourism, Phu Quoc is well on its way to becoming a shining light in the Southeast Asian tourism landscape. It will be interesting to see how developments will shape up to APEC 2027!
