Bangkok is experiencing a construction boom: mega shopping center The Central is coming!
Big things are happening in Bangkok: Central Pattana has presented plans for a new shopping and lifestyle center called “The Central”. This ambitious project, which involves an investment of around CHF 500 million, is considered one of the most important retail projects in Thailand and will open in the fourth quarter of 2026. The total area of the area is an impressive 457,000 square meters. Travelnews.ch reports that the heart of the project will be a congress hall that can be used for international events, concerts and trade fairs.
Strategically located in the Phaholyothin corridor, the project is also optimally connected to the public transport network. The catchment area includes around 2.5 million people who are considered to have particularly high purchasing power. “The Central” will thus become a mega-complex for major appearances by international brands and will offer retailers wide presentation areas. In addition to the shopping experience, an extensive range of restaurants, event rooms and modern work areas will also be available.
Sustainability in focus
Central Pattana, Thailand's leading sustainability real estate developer, has unveiled a long-term vision called “Pioneering Growth & Beyond”. As Kaohoon International reports, 120 billion baht will be invested in the development of mixed-use projects and transformation projects over the next five years. The company plans to implement 135 projects by the end of the year, including 30 mixed-use projects.
President and CEO Wallaya Chirathivat highlights successes in retail, residential, hotel and office sectors. The planned retail projects include Market Place Theprak, which will open on March 28, 2025, and Central Park and Central Krabi in August and October 2025.
A new hub for Bangkok
The mega-project “The Central” is set to not only create a stir in the Phaholyothin corridor, but also create a new central business district (CBD) in Bangkok. According to Keller Henson, mixed-use developments are becoming increasingly popular in the city to meet the needs of an urban population. This type of development combines residential, commercial and leisure areas, enriching the lifestyle of many Bangkokians.
Numerous mixed-use projects that combine luxury hotels, shopping centers and offices contribute to the dynamic urban development. For example, “ONE Bangkok”, which is planned with an investment of around 3.9 billion US dollars and covers an area of 16.7 hectares, or “Dusit Central Park”, which offers a five-star hotel and office space. These developments are not only of interest to the local population, but also attract tourists who want to experience the diversity of Bangkok.
With “The Central” a further step is taken towards a more sustainable and lively city. The project promises not only economic growth, but also an improvement in the quality of life in the city. It remains exciting to see what impulses this large project will provide for Bangkok and beyond.
