Elevator at Kad Luang Market: Nostalgia and new convenience for Chiang Mai!
In Chiang Mai, the charming “Rose of the North” of Thailand, work was recently completed on an old elevator in the famous Kad Luang Market. After around a month of repairs, the elevator, which is central to the convenience of many buyers, can be used again. The governor of Chiang Mai, Thossapon Phuan-udom, took the opportunity to personally test the elevator and emphasize the importance of the market for the local economy. With the government's Let's Go Halves program supporting retail, the market will continue to be a focus to provide residents and visitors with an even better shopping experience. Loud Nation of Thailand The recommissioning should not only provide more comfort, but also awaken nostalgic memories, as many long-established sellers remember the history of the elevator.
Kad Luang, also known as Warorot Market, was founded more than a hundred years ago - around 1910 by Chao Inthawarorot Suriyawong, the last reigning prince of Chiang Mai. The market has since overcome many challenges and has become a vibrant center for locals and tourists. Here you will not only find fresh produce, meat and seafood, but also clothing, accessories and many traditional northern Thai delicacies.
A place full of memories
Among the vendors is 80-year-old Grandma New, who has run a clothing store near the elevator for more than 70 years. She remembers well when the elevator was installed in the market - a real piece of history! However, after a short time it fell victim to high electricity costs and was no longer in operation for a long time. Her neighbor Nuch, who runs a souvenir shop, also said she was happy about the elevator's comeback and is particularly pleased about the relief it will provide for older shoppers who haven't had the opportunity to use it in the last 20 years.
The market structure itself has changed over the years and is divided into different areas: the ground floor offers a variety of food and fresh produce, while the upper floors are filled with clothing, textiles and souvenirs. The outdoor area, where numerous street vendors offer their goods, also creates a lively atmosphere and attracts many visitors every day. Visitors can discover the full range of northern Thai cuisine here, from the traditional Sai Ua sausage to various sweet specialties.
