Sukhothai Marathon 2025: Sporting highlight in the historical park!

On October 11, 2025, Wat Chaimongkol in Tambon Naiwiang, Amphoe Mueang, Phrae Province shone in celebratory splendour. During a Buddhist consecration ceremony for the Phra Buddha Chaimongkol statue and the Phra Chao Pakthong medal, many believers gathered to take part in this venerable event. Presided over by Phra Rajakhetra, abbot of Wat Saphaerabhat Mingmuang Worawihan, the occasion was also celebrated as the 45th birthday of Phra Khru Khosit Sangkhapithak, abbot of Wat Chaimongkol.

The statue itself, known as **พระพุทธสิงห์ชัยมงคล**, is an impressive Buddha statue in the Mara Victory pose and dates from the Chiang Saen period. Measuring 24 inches in bronze, it combines artful craftsmanship and deep-rooted religious significance. The statue was originally handed over to the army by General Phaya Pichai Songkhram on June 19, 1933 and has played a prominent role in ritual practices ever since. This inauguration was not only a celebration of spirituality, but also a symbol of the cultural heritage that remains preserved despite the passage of time in Thailand.

Buddhist currents and traditions

Buddhism is a central part of Thai life, with 94.6% of the Thai population professing this faith. Buddhism in Thailand, which is strongly influenced by the Theravada school, integrates both folk religious elements and influences from Brahmanism. The towering chedis of many temples are often adorned with gold decorations, reflecting the richness of the Thai architectural tradition.

The history of Buddhism in Thailand dates back to King Ashoka in the 3rd century BC. and has since then developed through different eras. The Thai interpretation of Buddhism places great emphasis on the role of monks, who act as carriers of teachings and lead important ceremonies in temples.

Sport and culture in Chiang Mai and the surrounding area

The Sukhothai Marathon is also on the program on October 12, 2025, which will take place for the third time in the Sukhothai Historical Park. Organized by TAT Sukhothai and various partners, this event aims to promote sports tourism in the region. Around 2,300 participants are expected, around 60% of whom come from other regions of the country. This shows how closely sport and culture are linked.

A panel discussion on the topic of “Decentralization” was recently held in Lamphun, organized by Phanupon Chaiworn. The role of civil society and the need for decentralized administration in the province were discussed. Lamphun has an impressive per capita income of 226,464 baht per year, ranking 13th in Thailand. In this region, not only politics are discussed, but also the promotion of sporting activities, which Dr. Siwanat Methipachuchoto, director of the Dhammathasith School, demonstrated this by taking part in a sports competition.

What is happening in Chiang Mai and the surrounding area is characterized by a harmonious connection between tradition and modernity. The upcoming events and the continued appreciation of Buddhism show that both spirituality and community life are firmly anchored in the region.
