Beginning of winter in Chiang Mai: fog, cold and crowds of tourists!

It's getting cooler in Chiang Mai today as the Thai Meteorological Department has announced the start of the winter season on October 23rd - about a week later than usual. This fresh air causes temperatures to drop particularly noticeably at higher altitudes in Doi Inthanon National Park. The latest reports from October 22nd show a temperature clash: only 9°C was measured at the summit, while at Kew Mae Pan Viewpoint it was 12°C. It's impossible to miss the mists shrouding the stunning scenery from Kew Mae Pan to the summit, making the situation particularly picturesque for early visitors.

These fresh temperatures mark the long-awaited start of winter in the region. Tourists are enjoying this first single-digit temperature of the season - the best conditions for the peak tourism season in northern Thailand. In downtown Chiang Mai, morning temperatures are a pleasant 22-23°C, and clear skies are accompanied by gentle, cold winds that make the day even more pleasant. But while some districts, such as San Sai and Doi Saket, are still covered by a thick fog, visitors head to the mountains to fully enjoy the fresh morning air.

Attractions and nature experiences in Doi Inthanon National Park

Doi Inthanon, the highest peak in Thailand, is attracting more and more visitors. The national park covers 482 km² and offers a wealth of opportunities for nature lovers, including spectacular waterfalls, scenic hiking trails and numerous viewpoints. The park is known for its high humidity and cold weather year-round. Especially in the cooler months between November and February, temperatures are often between 0 and 18°C, which favors frost and clear visibility. This brings many tourists to the region to experience the unique flora and fauna.

The wildlife in the national park is diverse, with around 65 known species of mammals living here. Among them are wild boars, gibbons and deer. Additionally, the park is home to an estimated 500 to 510 different species of birds - the highest number in Thailand. This diversity particularly attracts bird watchers and photographers who value the experience of nature.

Planning and visiting Doi Inthanon National Park

The park is accessible via Songthaews, inexpensive public transport, although you should allow a transfer time of at least 2.5 to 3 hours from Chiang Mai. A car or motorbike is recommended to explore the area, as the distances between the individual attractions are long. Popular points of contact include the Doi Inthanon summit, the Ang Ka Luang nature trail and the two impressive Chedis.

Visitors should definitely pack thick jackets and weatherproof clothing, as weather conditions can change quickly, especially at higher altitudes, with the risk of frost and unexpected afternoon rain. In the high season, accommodation prices rise by 30 to 50 percent, while in the rainy season they sometimes fall by up to 40 percent. A clear head is also required when it comes to entrance fees: foreigners pay around 10 USD, while the park is open daily between 5:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.

All in all, the beginning of winter in Chiang Mai is a highlight not only for the locals, but also for the many tourists who enjoy the impressive nature and fresh air to the fullest. Doi Inthanon, with its mysterious mists and cool temperatures, offers the ideal ambience for anyone who wants to escape the hustle and bustle of the city.

Those interested will find many opportunities for relaxation and nature observation in the Doi Inthanon National Park. As Nation Thailand reports, the park is particularly popular this time of year, while Thai National Parks and Thai Travel Book offer valuable tips for planning an unforgettable visit.
