Phuket is currently on alert due to a new drug trafficking system that uses QR codes. According to MP Chalermpong Saengdee, stickers leading to online criminal networks have been discovered on popular tourist hotspots such as lampposts and telephone booths. This website, written in Russian, allows users to buy drugs such as ketamine, ecstasy and mephedrone and pay with cryptocurrencies. To get the drugs, buyers must join a closed group and, after paying, are given a GPS location for pickup.
Such modern methods make it much more difficult for the police to catch the drug dealers because there are no face-to-face meetings. Chalermpong therefore calls for rapid intervention by the authorities to investigate and stop these activities. It is important to him that Phuket maintains a safe and drug-free image as a tourism destination, as the threat has now spread to Bangkok, where similar QR codes have been spotted. The challenges for the Thai security forces could hardly be greater: removing the stickers and identifying those behind it.

The British government has updated its travel advice to highlight Thailand's strict drug laws. A common misconception is that the decriminalization of cannabis in 2022 will also result in less punishment for other drugs.
