Police building in Sam Sen: decision to demolish due to risk of landslides!

The police building in Sam Sen faces demolition after experts found cracks in the sand and signs of a dangerous landslide on the road in front of Vajira Hospital. The Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA) is already active and reporting on the progress of the work. Deputy Prime Minister and Transport Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn visited the site and called for prompt cooperation from all relevant authorities to ensure the safety and speedy restoration of the road. Safety is the top priority, which could result in the return of the site taking a little longer than originally planned, according to MRTA deputy executive director Kittikorn Tanpaow.

The damage is worrying: a third of the police building has been deemed unsafe for future use. In order to defuse the situation, several measures had to be taken. All vehicles that were under the endangered building have been relocated and the back wall of the building will be breached to get the vehicles out. Partial demolitions are necessary, particularly on the vulnerable side, and the left side of the building will be reinforced to prevent further landslides. Engineers are also monitoring neighboring buildings, including the Police Flat and Vajira Hospital, to ensure their safety.

Previous incidents and danger zone

There was already an earth subsidence incident in front of Wachiraphayaban Hospital on September 24, 2025. This subsidence occurred near a construction site for the subway's Purple Line, specifically between Tao Poon and Rat Burana. Fortunately, there were no injuries, but three vehicles were damaged and the Bangkok city government declared a danger zone and closed access. To ensure safety, seven urgent measures were ordered, including shutting off the water supply and conducting a safety assessment of surrounding buildings. Bangkok Governor Chatchart Sitthiphan warned that rain could further worsen the situation and a monitoring team was set up. Wachiraphayaban Hospital suspended its outpatient services for two days to ensure safety.

Rescue operations and accompanying symptoms

The situation in Bangkok hasn't gotten any easier since a high-rise building under construction collapsed under mysterious circumstances. During the rescue operations, survivors are searched for under the rubble. The collapsed building fell during a violent earthquake in the region. The rescue work is challenging because there is a risk of rock avalanches and the rescuers have to use heavy equipment. Despite the emergency situation, hope for survivors is dwindling, which makes the situation unbearable for the relatives.

A commission of experts will be set up to investigate the causes of the collapse. There is speculation in the media about possible reasons such as botched construction and corruption, although there is no concrete evidence for this. These incidents underscore the urgency to improve safety standards in construction projects in the city.

The city administration and the MRTA have set up an operations center to actively manage the current situation in the affected areas and control access for the public.
