Thailand is struggling: Tourism is shrinking despite new strategies!

Thailand is facing an unprecedented challenge in the tourism sector. A sharp decline in international visitors has plunged the industry into crisis, and the government is responding with new strategies to counteract this development. How Hawaii Public Radio reports, the Thai government is planning measures to promote domestic tourism and hopes to offset the decline in foreign visitors. One proposal would make travel expenses for vacations tax deductible, but only for Thai citizens.

The numbers show an alarming picture: 35 million international tourists visited Thailand in 2024, an increase of more than 26% compared to the previous year. The government even set a target of 40 million visitors for 2025. But current estimates suggest it will likely be just over 30 million, marking the first annual decline since the pandemic. A key reason for this is the massive decline in visitor numbers from China, which used to be the largest source market.

Decline in visitor numbers and their causes

The tourism industry in Thailand is experiencing its sharpest decline in years. Loud Bangkok Local Arrivals from abroad fell by 4.66% in the first half of 2025 compared to the previous year. In the Asia-Pacific region in particular, the losses are dramatic, with a decline of 12.01%. China even recorded a decline of 41.94% in June. While arrivals from Europe and Oceania increased slightly, they were unable to offset losses from Asia.

The Thai Hotels Association (THA) raises concerns about deeper structural problems. THA President Teinprasit Chaiyapatranun spoke of an unprecedented decline and called for comprehensive reforms. Security and service issues remain major barriers to tourist confidence. The THA calls on the government to launch proactive advertising campaigns and respond effectively to long overdue reforms.

Thailand as a travel destination: challenges for the future

Although Bangkok ranked 17th among the world's most popular travel destinations in 2024, the question remains whether this popularity can continue. Country data points out that Thailand has also benefited from mass tourism in the past, but it poses serious environmental problems and challenges to infrastructure and services. The first long-term guests, including hippies and backpackers in the 80s, shaped the image of Thailand as a friendly and welcoming holiday destination. But the regulatory problems and service-related difficulties cannot be ignored.

In the end, the question remains: Can Thailand restore its image as a safe and attractive destination? The government has recognized the seriousness of the situation and wants to react now at the latest in order to boost international tourism again and secure jobs in related sectors. There's something going on! The next few months will show whether the planned measures will take effect and Thailand will find its way back to its former strength.
