Bomb threat forces IndiGo flight to make emergency landing in Mumbai!
On November 1, 2025, a worrying incident took place at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) in Hyderabad, putting the spotlight on Indian aviation safety. At 05:25 am, an email was sent to the airport's customer service department by a person named Papaita Rajan containing a bomb threat against IndiGo Flight 6E 68 en route from Jeddah to Hyderabad. In it, the sender claimed that “onboard LTTE-ISI operatives” had planned an attack on the airport. This disturbing announcement included information about the use of IEDs (improvised explosive devices) and nerve gas, which put alerted security forces on high alert. Dynamitenews reports that the email attachment included detailed information about the locations of the alleged explosives.
After receiving the email, the Bomb Threat Assessment Committee (BTAC) immediately convened an emergency meeting. The committee met virtually between 5:39 a.m. and 6:22 a.m. to assess the situation in detail. The decision was made to divert the said flight to the nearest airport, Mumbai. The captain was informed about air traffic control (ATC) and the landing in Mumbai was secured. The affected passengers were provided with refreshments and updated on the current status of the flight during the incident, while all security checks after landing remained uneventful. News18 reported that investigations into this case have already been initiated, but the identity of the person making the threat is still unknown.
Alarming: increase in bomb threats
This incident is not isolated, but is part of a worrying series of bomb threats in Indian aviation. According to Aerotelegraph, there were around 100 bomb threats in India in the week before this incident alone. An Italian flight had to turn back over Afghanistan on October 20, 2025; Although the threat turned out to be false, the incident left its mark on the aviation industry.
The Indian government is clearly concerned about the increasing number of such threats, which are putting the entire aviation system under pressure. The Minister of Civil Aviation described the situation as “very worrying” and announced full investigations and possible legal consequences for those responsible. Penalties for such threats are expected to be increased to prevent future incidents.
Given these incidents, it remains to be seen what measures the Indian authorities will take to ensure the safety of travelers and regain confidence in air transport. The affected airlines have a duty to continually improve their security protocols and immediately report suspicious activities. In view of these alarming developments, it becomes clear once again how important vigilance and safety measures are in international air traffic.
