Singapore Airlines plans non-stop flights to Chiang Mai: Everything you need to know!
What's happening in aviation? There is currently a lot of interest from Singapore Airlines (SQ), which is in talks with the Thai aviation authorities about non-stop flights between Singapore Changi Airport (SIN) and Chiang Mai International Airport (CNX). If all goes according to plan, Chiang Mai could become the third destination in Thailand for Singapore Airlines, joining the popular destinations of Bangkok and Phuket. Loud Aviation A2Z An official announcement is imminent as talks point to progress.
The Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT) has already confirmed meetings with the airline, further supporting the prospect of a new route. This would not only better connect Chiang Mai to the major cities, but also strengthen access to northern Thailand and offer a valuable addition to the existing connections to Bangkok and Phuket.
Growth on existing routes
Singapore Airlines has also announced an impressive 17% increase in capacity on the key Singapore-Bangkok route. Seven daily flights are planned from March 29, 2026. Phuket is also experiencing growth, with currently six daily flights and 35 weekly flights for summer 2026. To date, the Singapore to Chiang Mai route is served exclusively by Scoot (TR), which flies twice daily with an Airbus A321neo. But Scoot doesn't remain idle either. The airline plans to increase the frequencies to 11 weekly flights from October 27, 2025 and even to 14 weekly flights from December 3, 2025.
However, there is less good news for Thai AirAsia (FD), which gave up the connection to Chiang Mai in May 2012 and only returned briefly between February and October 2025. Interestingly, Chiang Mai International Airport has established itself as Thailand's fourth busiest airport, with an impressive increase in international passenger numbers of 34% in 2024. The peak travel season for Chiang Mai is from November to March, which fits perfectly into the season given the planned new route.
The planes and the views
Singapore Airlines plans to use the Boeing 737-8 MAX for the new Chiang Mai route. What will be particularly interesting is that the airline will rely heavily on transit connections via Singapore Changi Airport. Chiang Mai is currently attracting many international visitors, particularly from China, South Korea, Taiwan as well as Europe, the USA and Australia.
