Bangkok sticks with bus terminals: big improvements are coming!
A lot is happening in the area of transport infrastructure in Bangkok. How Nation of Thailand reports, Deputy Transport Minister Mallika Jiraphanwanich has stated that the current government has decided to improve the city's bus hubs instead of relocating them. The three bus terminals will therefore remain in their original location and will be revitalized with an expanded feeder system that will allow better connections to other public transport systems.
Transport Co. Managing Director Atthawit Rakchamroon presented the progress of the redevelopment plan for the Mo Chit 2 terminal, which is located on a plot of 80 rai. In fiscal year 2025, 39 million baht is available to hire consultants for planning and design of the project. A comprehensive study has already been completed and it plans to submit a budget request of 3.6 billion baht in 2026 to begin redevelopment at the existing site. The aim of the measures is clear: service efficiency for passengers should be maximized.
New plans for the bus station
But it's not just the existing infrastructure that is being revamped. The Ministry of Transport also plans to build a new bus station in the Bang Sue area, such as the Bangkok Post announces. This new terminal will be located within walking distance of the Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal and will serve as a modern and user-friendly hub. Amid complaints about the abysmal quality of service at Mo Chit 2, which serves as a temporary bus station, the need for a comprehensive solution is evident.
The new terminal, inspired by the Japanese train stations in Hakata and Tokyo, will be developed as a mixed-use building with commercial rental space and offices. To minimize environmental impact, there will be no bus depot in the terminal - buses will only arrive and depart according to their schedule. Plans include tunnels and covered walkways that will ensure smooth connections to buses, trains and electric rail services.
The challenges of traffic in Bangkok
Bangkok is known for its complex transport network, which includes the use of subways, elevated trains, buses and boats. Like the website Fascination with Southeast Asia impressively describes, taxis and the Skytrain are very popular with tourists, while buses and canal boats are often less popular. Due to the large number of local transport providers, separate tickets are necessary for each mode of transport, which can be a challenge, especially for newcomers to the city.
The significant transport connections also include the Airport Rail Link, which offers a quick connection from the airport to the city center, as well as the extensive bus network, but which is difficult for many to navigate. In terms of the planned improvements, the combination of a new, modern bus station and the renovation of existing terminals could not only increase efficiency, but also sustainably improve the overall appearance of public transport in Bangkok.
