The Yi Peng Lantern Festival will be held from November 5th to 6th, 2025, with the theme of “Nopburi Heritage, Continuation of Knowledge, Valuable Culture, Yi Peng Lanna International”. During this time, Chiang Mai is enveloped in a sea of lights and lanterns. The event has deep historical roots and symbolizes both driving away bad luck and receiving blessings for the new year. The name “Yi Peng” itself refers to the second day of the full moon and marks the end of the rainy season.
Visitors can take part in numerous activities, including releasing sky lanterns (Khom Loi) and celebrating at temples where the community comes together. The city will be particularly festively decorated at some main locations, such as Tha Phae Gate and Wat Phan Tao Temple. However, visitors should be prepared for large crowds and wear respectful clothing to maintain the traditional setting. Tickets for the festival can be purchased online or directly from the organizers, although early booking is advisable due to high demand.
