Severe storm warnings: Bangkok and the south are fighting against the risk of floods!
Thailand is currently being hit by exceptionally strong weather. The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) warned of severe thunderstorms and flash floods in 45 provinces, with Bangkok particularly notable. Heavy rain and squalls were forecast here, with a 60% chance of precipitation in the central region. Heavy showers are expected, especially in the afternoon hours. The initial situation is tense due to a strong southwest monsoon that is affecting the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand and is bringing turbulent weather, as Wochenblitz reports.
The situation is particularly problematic in Yala, where the country's highest rainfall of 81 mm was recorded in the last 24 hours. The south, and especially the east coast, is in for persistent heavy to very heavy rain. This is reinforced by a moderate monsoon trough. While a high pressure system from China is expected over northern Thailand from October 21st to 24th, which is expected to ease the weather conditions in the north and northeast, the situation in the south remains tense. Nation Thailand reports that particularly vulnerable areas due to flooding can currently be found in 16 provinces.
Affected regions and health warnings
The flooding and storm risks extend across several regions. In the lower north/central region, provinces such as Phitsanulok, Sukhothai and Nakhon Sawan are affected. In the northeast, Udon Thani and Ubon Ratchathani are hit, while in the greater Bangkok area, areas such as Chachoengsao and Suphan Buri are on the danger list. Residents in these vulnerable zones are urged to be vigilant and monitor updates from disaster management agencies.
Thailand's weather service is urging caution, especially for fishermen and boat operators, who are urged not to go out during thunderstorms. There are also warnings about sudden flooding, especially in well-known problem areas in Bangkok. Waves of up to 2 meters are measured on the beaches on the east coast, making swimming unsafe. The Thailandtip reports of a monsoon depression that is causing extremely bad weather across several regions.
Expected weather developments
The forecast for the coming days is keeping people in suspense. While the northeast and the central region will continue to have to contend with sometimes severe thunderstorms, the weather forecast for the north promises some cooling. Temperatures between 23 and 36 degrees Celsius are expected across regions, with humid conditions in many provinces. The south continues to be plagued by thunderstorms and heavy rain, while recovery in northern latitudes is expected only weeks after the current storm.
Tourists and locals would do well to follow the weather reports daily in order to get through this unpleasant time safely and informed.
