New spider species in Thailand: Sensational gynandromorph discovered!
The discovery of a new species of spider has caused a stir in Thailand. Chulalongkorn University doctoral student Chawakorn Kunsete has a particularly rare spider namedDamarchus inazumaidentified showing the phenomenon of bilateral gynandromorphism. This means that one side of the spider has male characteristics and the other side has female characteristics, which is a fascinating peculiarity in the animal world. The specimen is almost perfectly divided into red-brown and black-white halves.
But what exactly is gynandromorphism? This rare phenomenon is caused by a genetic error during embryonic development and causes sex chromosomes to be distributed unevenly. For this reason, such finds have so far been documented mainly in birds, butterflies and crustaceans, but not in mammals. The new specimen, discovered in holes in the ground in western Thailand near the border with Myanmar, is now the first documented gynandromorph spider in the family Bemmeridae, as GMX reported.
Details about the spider
The differences between the genders of the spider are particularly impressive. Male specimens measure about 1.5 cm, while females grow up to 2.5 cm long. The maleD. inazumais black with a white dusting and is characterized by three small spines on the tibial apophysis, while the female is almost black with orange-brown legs and has an elongated spermathecal stalk with an inwardly curved shape. These strong sexual characteristics make the species particularly interesting for scientists and sampling hunters.
The name “Inazuma” has its origins in the popular anime series “One Piece” and shows how cultural references can also be incorporated into scientific naming. This creative connection not only makes research more attractive, but also generates a certain level of interest among the wider public.
The spider ecosystem in Thailand
Not only are spiders fascinating, they also play a crucial role in Thailand's ecosystem. This tropical country is home to a wide variety of spider species, widely distributed in nature and urban areas. Hello Thailand describes that most spiders are nocturnal and feed primarily on mosquitoes, flies and other insects. Most spiders are harmless, and only a few species pose a danger to humans. A spider bite usually resembles a mosquito bite, unless allergic reactions occur, in which case a visit to the doctor is advisable.
Thailand's warm, humid climate allows many species of spiders to thrive, especially in the jungle. Spiders are often found even in urban areas. The most common gems in our local nature include the golden silk spider, hopping spiders and tarantulas. These not only contribute to ecological balance, but people often encounter them with a relaxed calmness.
Fear or disgust of spiders is less common in Thailand, perhaps due to the deep-rooted cultural appreciation for all living things. In rural areas, spiders are sometimes even consumed as food. Respectful treatment of animals is also an important tradition in Buddhist temples.
The discovery ofDamarchus inazumanot only shows the diversity of the spider world in Thailand, but also the wealth and unpredictability of nature itself.
