Phuket Lobster receives official designation of origin – a feast for gourmets!
Phuket has exciting news from the culinary world! The Thai Ministry of Commerce has registered the geographical indication (GI) for the famous “Phuket Lobster” (กุ้งมังกร 7 สีภูเก็ต). This recognition is the fourth of its kind in the province and joins Phuket Pineapple, Phuket Wild Orange and Phuket Pearls. A great sign for regional identity and strengthening the local economy!
The registration has several significant objectives: not only to protect the quality and origins of this culinary gem, but also to give a real boost to the local fishing industry. Because the Phuket Lobster is not only an economical product, but also a real flagship of the gastronomy scene on the island.
A culinary experience
What makes Phuket Lobster so special? The special properties of the shrimp result from the unique geographical location in the Andaman Sea. Here, the optimal salt content and constant water currents ensure that the lobsters thrive optimally in the cages off Phuket. Their diet consists of local, calcium-rich feed, resulting in particularly firm and sweet meat that is highly prized by gourmets.
With a weight of at least 500 grams and an iridescent coloring that includes at least seven colors, these sea creatures are not only a hit in terms of taste, but also a real visual delight. Whether raw as sashimi or grilled and baked – the preparation options are diverse.
Economic importance
The numbers speak for themselves: the average annual production is an impressive 21,670 kilograms. The selling price can reach up to 3,000 baht per kilogram, generating economic value of over 65 million baht per year. This makes the “Phuket Lobster” also known as the “Foie Gras of the Sea”. It was even served as an upscale dish at APEC 2022.
Go Pan, a local entrepreneur, sees GI Registration as an excellent opportunity to add value and improve the credibility of the product. It's just a shame that the region's gastronomy sector has so far suffered from the consequences of the pandemic, but initiatives like this will certainly boost its revival.
The ministry also plans to introduce a quality assurance system for GI products and strengthen cooperation with local authorities to further promote gastronomic tourism in Phuket. This shows that there is really something going on here!
Developments like these can further put Phuket in the spotlight as a foodie destination and take the local economy to new levels. The anticipation of the delicious dishes prepared with these premium shrimps is growing. Phuket remains a hotspot for enjoyment and quality from the sea!
