50 years of friendship: Thailand celebrates with a colorful moon festival!
Yesterday, October 7, 2025, the special event “Amazing Thailand Mid-Autumn Night 2025” was celebrated in Bangkok. Marking the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Thailand and China, this event was all about unity, family and culture, inspired by the traditional Mid-Autumn Festival. Minister of Tourism and Sports Atthakorn Sirilatthayakorn stressed the importance of friendship between the two countries: "China and Thailand are a family," he said during the celebrations organized by tourism agency TAT, coinciding with China's Golden Week.
The celebrations were a real highlight, attracting around 100 Chinese KOLs, content creators and media representatives, who had the opportunity to experience Thai culture up close. Various initiatives and activities, including a mooncake making event led by Minister Atthakorn, highlighted the deep cultural connection between Thailand and China. Complementary cultural performances and the participation of prominent guests such as actor Pong Nawat Kulrattanarak and musician Billkin Putthipong Assaratanakul created a festive atmosphere.
Mid-Autumn Festival celebrations
The Mid-Autumn Festival, which fell on October 6 this year, is enthusiastically celebrated in Thailand by a large Chinese community, making up about 10 to 12 percent of the population. With over 3,000 years of history, the festival symbolizes values such as harvest, reunification and gratitude. Celebrations traditionally include moon worship, lantern parades, cultural performances and family gatherings. Mooncakes are also typically eaten at the Mid-Autumn Festival, with the durian variant being particularly popular in Thailand.
There are numerous shops, especially in Bangkok, that offer mooncakes in different flavors. The five recommended locations include the W Bangkok and the Bangkok Marriott Marquis Queen's Park, where creative and elegant mooncakes can be found. It is also celebrated in many cities, such as Chiang Mai and Phuket, where local customs and traditions are kept alive.
Tourism initiatives and challenges
As part of the “Thailand, Told by You” campaign, TAT is also introducing innovative programs such as the “Chinese Passport Privilege”. This offers special offers at leading Thai retailers to encourage Chinese visitors and enhance travel experiences in Thailand. From January to September 2025, Thailand has already recorded 3,417,673 arrivals from China, and expectations for the fourth quarter are optimistic that this number will continue to grow.
The TAT also promotes sustainable tourism with initiatives such as “Trusted Thailand” and is planning numerous campaigns in collaboration with popular travel platforms in the coming weeks. The goal is clear: to strengthen Thailand as a preferred destination for Chinese travelers.
The Mid-Autumn Festival celebration and related events not only highlight the cultural bond between Thailand and China, but also demonstrate the Thai government's efforts to take tourism relations to a new level.
