Amritsar in airport high: New direct flights from Australia & Asia!

Amritsar is getting a major boost in terms of international air connectivity. The FlyAmritsar Initiative highlights the improved connectivity of Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport (SGRDJI). The winter season 2025/2026 will prove to be one of the strongest phases for connections from Amritsar to Southeast Asia, Australia and New Zealand. The number of weekly flights will increase from 36 to 40, meaning nearly 9,300 seats will be available between Amritsar and the main hubs in Kuala Lumpur, Singapore and Bangkok.

Airlines Malaysia Airlines, AirAsia, Scoot and Thai Lion Air begin their expanded operations. Malaysia Airlines is introducing 14 weekly flights between Kuala Lumpur and Amritsar and is also launching a new route to Brisbane, while AirAsia is increasing its flights from Kuala Lumpur to Amritsar from six to eight weekly. Scoot will offer ten weekly flights on the popular Boeing 787 Dreamliner. Thai Lion Air doubles direct flights between Amritsar and Bangkok.

More flight options for the Punjabi diaspora

What does that mean specifically? This will provide more flight options to SGRDJI for the Punjabi community in Australia, New Zealand and other Southeast Asian countries. This was recently announced by Sameep Singh Gumtala, the global coordinator of the FlyAmritsar Initiative. The new connections not only offer travelers direct flights, but also excellent connections to other destinations such as Japan and Hong Kong. Passengers can look forward to faster connections and improved accessibility.

The new route will also travel to Melbourne, Sydney, Perth, Adelaide and Auckland. Flight times between Amritsar and Australia are approximately 15-17 hours. For travelers from neighboring states like Jammu, Himachal Pradesh and Haryana, this will come as a welcome relief.

Aviation economic recovery

The international aviation industry has recovered well after the severe losses caused by the pandemic. Statista reports that passenger numbers in 2025 will be 21 percent higher than in 2018. But while air traffic is picking up again in many parts of the world, the industry in Germany is facing challenges. Here, pre-pandemic levels of flights are not expected until after 2030, primarily because of attractive rail transport and higher costs.

At SGRDJI Airport, the new direct connection could prove to be a catalyst for a lively exchange between cultures and regions. This offers not only locals but also international travelers a chance to discover Amritsar as a vibrant travel destination.

The aviation companies and the Punjab government are now required to further improve the infrastructure in Amritsar and actively support this development. Whether for business or tourism reasons, Amritsar is well on its way to becoming an international hub.
