FedEx strengthens Asia network: New freight connections for faster trade!

What's new in the Asian logistics sector? On November 3, 2025, FedEx Corporation in Singapore announced exciting news: they are expanding their intra-Asia network to meet growing trade demand in Southeast Asia. This expansion includes the introduction of non-stop cargo flights between Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport and Penang International Airport. Boeing B767 freighters will now fly five times a week, significantly increasing the efficiency of the supply chain.

The improved delivery times are a real win for importers: FedEx promises shipments will arrive an hour earlier. This also extends the collection time in Malaysia's Klang Valley by one hour, which is particularly advantageous for shipments from Kuala Lumpur to Asia. To further strengthen its logistics infrastructure, FedEx has also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Penang Development Corporation. The aim is to develop a 100,000 square foot logistics facility at the Penang International Logistics Aeropark by 2028.

Growth of the logistics market in Thailand

But it's not just FedEx that is tightening the reins, Thailand is also aiming to establish itself as a leading logistics center in Southeast Asia. The market is expected to grow from $50.16 billion to $72.19 billion by 2030. This increase is being fueled by government initiatives, foreign investment and a boom in e-commerce. What is particularly noteworthy is that over 36 million Thais will shop online in 2022, enormously increasing the demand for logistics services.

The Thai state is investing heavily in logistics infrastructure to create the most modern standards. THB 1.8 trillion (approximately USD 51 billion) was allocated to 20 mega-projects, including road, rail and port upgrades. The USD 8.8 billion Eastern Aviation City project is set to revolutionize aviation logistics in the region.

The Challenges and Opportunities for ASEAN

The rapid development of logistics systems in ASEAN is crucial to the competitiveness of member countries in global trade. Changes in the global economy and technology are expected in 2025-2024, requiring an innovative approach to logistics management. According to the World Bank, the Logistics Performance Index (LPI) shows clear differences between ASEAN countries. Singapore tops the ranking globally, while Thailand is ranked 37th.

There is no question that Member States need to develop their logistics infrastructures and adapt to changes in international trade. Thailand must use its strategic location and existing trade agreements in order not to lose out in competition with countries such as Vietnam and Indonesia, which are also investing heavily in their logistics.

The next period will be exciting: How Thailand and other ASEAN countries will overcome the challenges and improve their logistics systems remains to be seen. But one thing is certain: a good hand will be the key to driving regional connectivity and economic development.
