New flight connection: AirAsia starts Chiang Mai-Udon Thani from December!

The Thai aviation landscape is experiencing an exciting new addition: From December 1, 2025, AirAsia will be offering a brand new flight connection from Chiang Mai to Udon Thani. This route is operated four times a week - every Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday - and is intended to significantly expand travel options for many tourists and locals. The price for a one-way ticket starts at just 999 baht, making the journey both comfortable and affordable. Bookings are open until November 30, for travel until March 28, 2026. The flights will be operated by modern Airbus A320s that can accommodate 180 passengers, as Chiang Mai CityLife reports.

In his speech, Santisuk Klongchaiya, CEO of Thai AirAsia, highlighted the importance of Chiang Mai as a major travel destination and supporting the tourism sector in northern Thailand. The company is celebrating 22 years of successful service in Chiang Mai and currently has five aircraft based at the location. For AirAsia in particular, which has around 36% market share at Chiang Mai Airport, the expansion of the route network is a strategic step to strengthen its regional presence.

Growth opportunities in air transport

The new flights to Udon Thani are part of a larger trend that has revolutionized cheap aviation. Thai AirAsia is one of the leading low-cost airlines in Thailand, with Bangkok as the main hub for domestic and international connections. According to Aviation A2Z, the airline's 20 busiest routes are predominantly domestic. The routes to Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Phuket, which recorded a significant increase in passengers last year, are particularly in demand.

  • Bangkok – Chiang Mai: 4,233,333 Passagiere
  • Bangkok – Phuket: 4,476,471 Passagiere
  • Bangkok – Hat Yai: 2,173,513 Passagiere
  • Bangkok – Krabi: 1,340,426 Passagiere
  • Bangkok – Khon Kaen: 1,225,641 Passagiere

The demand on these routes shows that interest in air travel in Thailand remains unbroken, especially since the COVID-19 pandemic cast its shadow. The country has now re-established itself as an attractive tourist destination and statistics show that Thai passenger aviation is expected to return to pre-pandemic levels by 2025, Statista notes.

A look into the future

The return of Chinese tourists, who made up the largest group of international visitors to Thailand before the pandemic, is seen as an important part of the air passenger sector's recovery. With this new connection from Chiang Mai to Udon Thani, the tourism industry in northern Thailand is expected to receive a new boost. The Thai government and private companies are also investing in airport expansion projects to meet increasing demand and further strengthen Thailand as an aviation hub.

AirAsia with its new connection not only demonstrates the adaptability and innovation in the aviation industry, but also the commitment to make travel more affordable and accessible for everyone. In this way, the company not only connects cities, but also cultures and people - which is particularly important in times like these.
