Phuket relies on AI traffic lights: Is this the solution to traffic chaos?
The traffic situation on Phuket is a real nuisance for many, especially during high season when the island is flooded with tourists. But now there is hope: Phuket is planning to use artificial intelligence to tackle this problem. A two-phase upgrade plan to improve traffic flow during the busy months was unveiled at a meeting at Phuket Provincial Hall led by Governor Saransak Srikruanetra. Loud VNExpress AI-controlled traffic lights are to be installed at central intersections that automatically adapt to current traffic conditions - a measure that is intended to optimize traffic in real time.
The first phase involves upgrading existing traffic lights with intelligent sensors and specific software. These new systems will make it possible to monitor vehicle flow around the clock and adjust signal times accordingly. The goal is clear: the revamped traffic lights should be ready ahead of this month's surge in tourist numbers, with Phuket expecting up to 56,000 passengers and 380 flights daily, The Thaiger reports.
From vision to reality
The second phase of the project includes the introduction of digital warning signs and real-time traffic updates. In addition, a central control center will be set up to efficiently control traffic flows. These comprehensive measures are intended not only to relieve current traffic, but also to transform Phuket into a “smart city” and a world-class tourism hub. Governor Saransak emphasizes the need for collaboration between government, the private sector and the public to develop a modern and sustainable transportation system.
But that's not all: Phuket has other “construction sites”. The plan is to build a 1.95 kilometer long road from Baan Muang Mai to the airport, which is scheduled to be completed in 2028. The 4.55 kilometer long extension of Route 4027 will also be completed by 2026. Additionally, work is underway on the Patong Tunnel and the Phuket Expressway. The port expansions aim to further strengthen the island's logistics role, while Phuket International Airport expands its terminals and road network to handle 18 million passengers annually.
In order to optimize traffic on Phuket in the long term, the provincial government is relying on modern AI technologies that have already proven themselves in other cities. As demonstrated by the experience in San Antonio, Texas, AI-powered systems can not only increase passenger expectations but also improve the efficiency of overall traffic management. PTV Group report that significant savings in travel times and emissions can be achieved through data analysis and intelligent planning.
All measures and investments are focused on better equipping Phuket for future challenges. With a concrete plan and the use of modern technologies, the traffic situation on the popular holiday island could soon be a thing of the past. We can only hope that the implementation of the plans goes smoothly and that visitors to the island will be able to get from A to B more easily in the future.
