Hong Kong meets Chiang Mai: colorful exhibition delights visitors

On October 6, 2025, the cultural connection between Hong Kong and Thailand will be celebrated in a unique way in Chiang Mai. An exhibition brings Hong Kong's iconic urban landscape to life through colorful and interactive installations. Among these impressive attractions is a replica tram and a vibrant skyline that combines tradition and modernity. These experiences offer visitors a fascinating insight into the dynamics and heritage of Hong Kong, as Nation Thailand reports.

The ceremonial opening of the exhibition will be attended by important personalities. Ms. Li Jing, Acting Consul of the Consulate General of the People's Republic of China in Chiang Mai, and Mr. Wiraphong Rhitrot, Vice Governor of Chiang Mai, will be present along with other guests from the community. Mr. Parson Lam, Director of the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in Bangkok (HKETO), will emphasize the strong ties between Hong Kong and Thailand. “Thailand is a valued partner with deep ties in the areas of economic cooperation, tourism and cultural exchanges,” said Lam.

One step further in collaboration

The exhibition is not just a visual delight; it also aims to invite more Thais to explore Hong Kong as a dynamic center that combines modernity with tradition. In this context, Lam also presents new framework conditions to promote economic opportunities between Hong Kong and Thailand. He emphasizes that Hong Kong operates as a global business center with low tax levels, extensive transport connections and free flow of capital.

Interestingly, Hong Kong will further consolidate its leadership in trade, finance and shipping and position itself as a supply chain service hub. Planned measures, including reducing alcohol taxes, are expected to strengthen its position as a leading commercial center. In 2024, bilateral trade between Thailand and Hong Kong reached an impressive $19 billion, and Hong Kong is expected to be among Thailand's top five foreign investors by 2026, Thai Times reports.

A look into the history of relationships

Bilateral relations between Hong Kong and Thailand are not new. Thailand has had a consulate general in Hong Kong since 1868. This long existence paints a picture of stable trading relationships. It is interesting to know that in 2014, Hong Kong was Thailand's fifth largest export market and Thailand in turn was Hong Kong's 16th largest export market. Around 30,000 Thais live in Hong Kong, many of them as domestic helpers. This cultural penetration shows once again that Thailand is a popular holiday destination for Hongkongers, as Wikipedia notes.

The festive highlights in Chiang Mai are not only a celebration of art, but also a bridge for future economic ventures and cultural exchange between these two dynamic regions. It remains to be seen how these relationships will develop over the years. In any case, the current initiatives are a strong sign of the vibrant connection between Hong Kong and Thailand.
