New Café Café in Coffee opens: Enjoy fresh coffee in Mae Hong Son!
In a small but nice place on the main road TL 1194, very close to the Thatafang police station in Mae Hong Son, the new café “Café in Coffee” opened on October 21, 2025. Depending on your taste, the café offers a wide selection of freshly brewed coffee, prepared by talented local baristas, as well as delicious pastries. A particular focus is on the organic coffee beans from the region, which are available at extremely reasonable prices. All of this happens in a cozy atmosphere, which promises relaxing shade from large trees outside. Opening times are from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., so a visit can be enjoyable at any time of day.
The location of the cafe is also advantageous for travelers as Thatafang Police Station not only provides guests with an opportunity for refreshment but also a clean place to take a short break. The Mae Sam Laep region, known for its natural beauty and cultural heritage, attracts many visitors. The “Café in Coffee” could therefore become the new point of contact for travelers and locals looking for a place to retreat.
Experience coffee culture up close
Coffee has a long and multifaceted history in Thailand, which can nowhere be experienced as directly as here. Missionaries began cultivating this productive crop in northern Thailand as early as the late 19th century, but it wasn't until the 1960s that coffee cultivation really took off. This was largely achieved through the initiatives of the Royal Project Foundation, which was founded by, among others, King Bhumibol Adulyadej. The aim was to reduce opium cultivation and create sustainable livelihoods for the mountain tribes. Such great initiatives and developments that led to the enlightenment and improvement of agriculture.
In the decades that followed, the Thai government, supported by NGOs, invested heavily in research and the development of sustainable coffee growing methods. Since then, Arabica beans in particular have enjoyed great popularity due to their fine aroma. More recently, many farmers have recognized the benefits of the specialty coffee approach and have begun testing innovative processing methods that highlight the unique flavors of Thai coffee.
The social responsibility of the police
There are innovations not only in coffee production, there is also no idle activity in police work. On September 12, 2025, the “Panrak Chiang Rai” police department store was opened in Chiang Rai. This is the fifth branch of this project, which aims to create income opportunities to improve the quality of life for police families. The concept “From Village to a cup” stands for the use of first-class coffee beans from the Ban Doi Sam Muen police school in Chiang Mai. The offering includes over 30 different coffee and beverage menus as well as other handcrafted products by policewomen, who also provide souvenirs and snacks.
The idea of using coffee as a source of income helps strengthen communities while promoting the development of local culture. Cafés are not just places of enjoyment; Rather, they act as living social spaces that promote exchange between people and preserve cultural heritage.
But the Thai coffee industry is not without challenges. Issues such as climate change and market volatility present producers with major tasks. Nevertheless, the future of Thai coffee is assured as efforts move towards environmental sustainability and strengthening the resilience of coffee-growing communities.
With the new “Café in Coffee” and the initiatives in Chiang Rai, Thailand is once again showing that it is not just about selling coffee – it is about a story, about community and about a sustainable future.
