Drama on Phuket: Four tourists rescued after speedboat accident!

On November 6, 2025, dramatic scenes occurred off the coast of Koh Maiton when a speedboat carrying four foreign tourists ran aground on rocks due to strong waves. Fortunately, the holidaymakers were able to escape to the nearby island on their own and were uninjured. The rapid response of emergency services was crucial in bringing the situation under control. Admiral Veerudom Muangchin, director of the Marine Search and Rescue Center Region 3, launched the rescue boat T.272 at 7:50 p.m. However, due to adverse weather conditions, the original plan had to be adjusted; the boat waited for further support from Phuket. Finally, the T.272 returned to pick up a special team with necessary equipment, including a rubber boat, rope, flashlight, drinking water and food. The emergency services arrived at the scene of the accident at 10:50 p.m. and were able to get all four tourists safely on board the lifeboat, as fm91bkk.com reported.

In another incident, a tour boat named “Poseidon” was recently reported to have leaked off the coast of Phuket. There were five foreign tourists on board who got into difficulties during a dive. Rescue workers were alerted by the Khaimuk Tourist Assistance Center at 4:50 p.m. local time and rushed to help. The crew of the nearby ship Mermaid was able to temporarily cover the leak, while the Andaman Pearl 3, together with the Mermaid, pulled the damaged boat back to shore. Rewat Areerob, President of the Phuket Provincial Administration Organization (PAO), also confirmed the successful rescue of these tourists, as can be found at wochenblitz.com.

Increasing security for tourists

To avoid such incidents in the future, Phuket's Ministry of Tourism and Sports (MoTS) has launched a new project to improve safety in water tourism. A workshop has been taking place at Nai Yang Beach Resort & Spa and Sirinat National Park since June 14, 2024 and continues to this day. This move follows the tragic incident in June in which an American expatriate was swept away by a surf and later found dead. The initiative involves lifeguards from both the public and private sectors.

The training program offered by the accredited Life Saving Thailand School includes a mix of theoretical knowledge and practical skills: from surf safety to resuscitation techniques and life-saving measures. The training content includes, among other things, how to deal with rip currents and techniques for getting out of such situations. Kamonphan Chalermsakulrat, deputy director of TAT Phuket, emphasizes the great importance of security for the image of tourism in Phuket. According to schoenes-thailand.at, funding will also be provided by the Office of the Permanent Secretary and the MoTS to increase the safety potential in water tourism.
