Background and current developments

Unfortunately, Vera's case is not an isolated one. How CNN reports, Thailand is part of a human trafficking hub with many victims, including around 260 from Myanmar, being held captive in criminal networks. These networks make billions every year through illegal online scams. Pressure on Thai authorities has increased after high-profile cases such as the kidnapping of Chinese actor Wang Xing drew attention to the issue.

The Thai army has recently stepped up measures to combat illegal fraud hubs on the porous border with Myanmar. Numerous victims were rescued from these scenarios. However, the number of unreported cases is alarmingly high because criminal gangs can operate unhindered. It remains to be hoped that the empathetic reports on cases like Vera Kravtsova's and the work of the authorities will protect more people in the future and lead to an end to these criminal activities.
