Travel advisory: Safety along the Thai-Cambodian border
The current security situation in Thailand raises questions, particularly in the border areas with Cambodia. On October 27, 2025 the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) The all-clear has been given that tourism activities across the country will continue to run smoothly. But special security measures apply in the seven provinces along the Thai-Cambodia border, namely Ubon Ratchathani, Si Sa Ket, Surin, Buri Ram, Sa Kaeo, Chanthaburi and Trat.
Despite the general calm in the country, a different reality exists at the border. Martial law has been declared in these provinces and there are reports of fighting between Thai and Cambodian forces. This situation has the US government prompted the travel warning for these areas to be raised to level 4, meaning travel there is strongly discouraged. In particular, travelers should avoid checkpoints and restricted zones in these regions.
Current developments at the border
The military has declared martial law in certain districts of Chanthaburi and Trat, such as Mueang Chanthaburi and Kaeng Hang Maew. Local authorities are closely monitoring the situation and note that only the main transport services in the country, such as flights, trains, buses and ferries, are functioning normally. Tourist hotspots such as Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Phuket also remain unaffected by the unrest.
The TAT recommends travelers to observe safety regulations and follow the instructions of local authorities. For up-to-date information, holidaymakers can call the TAT Call Center on 1672 or contact the Tourist Police on 1155.
Risk assessment for travelers
The situation in Thailand's southern provinces, particularly in Yala, Pattani and Narathiwat, remains tense. Evacuations have already been ordered there and the German embassy advises to exercise caution. Travelers to these areas should think carefully about whether they want to start their trip. The risk of terrorist attacks and violent clashes is still present.
Although the risk for foreign travelers in Thailand is not generally high, visitors to areas near Bangkok and other main destinations in particular should always keep themselves informed about current developments and, if necessary, consider short-term changes to their travel plans. An emergency plan that doesn't rely on government support can't hurt either.
The recommendations also include obtaining comprehensive information about the medical and legal conditions on site, as well as not forgetting travel insurance and any necessary vaccinations. Thailand remains a popular travel destination - but you are well advised to keep a close eye on the conditions.
The following applies: If you want to benefit from the tourist advantages of Thailand, you should keep an eye on the local regulations and safety measures. The nature and culture of Thailand are unique, but safety comes first!
