VietJet launches Thailand's first sustainable flight route to Phu Quoc!
In the spirit of sustainable tourism, the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) recently introduced a significant step: On November 6, 2025, VietJet Thailand launched the first "Green Route" flight between Bangkok and Phu Quoc, which was fueled with sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). This is a milestone not only for the airline, but also for the entire aviation industry in the region. DID highlights that this flight is the first of its kind for a low-cost carrier in Thailand and shows what sustainable flying could look like in the future.
TAT Governor Ms. Thapanee Kiatphaibool praised VietJet Thailand for integrating sustainability into commercial aviation. With the support of PTT Oil and Retail Business Public Company Limited (PTT OR) and Bangkok Aviation Fuel Services (BAFS), the new route will make a significant contribution to reducing CO₂ emissions. Each flight operated with SAF can save up to 250 kilograms of CO₂, helping to achieve climate goals.
A goal for the future
VietJet plans to achieve a five percent share of SAF on all flights by 2030. This could have a significant impact on the aviation industry in ASEAN, which urgently needs to shift to clean and low-carbon operating methods. Thailand is considered a key region for SAF production, thanks to its rich bio-based resources. Against this backdrop, strengthening collaboration between the public and private sectors is seen as crucial to scaling production and supporting national carbon reduction targets.
While aviation faces a major transformation, Thailand is also gaining momentum in other areas of sustainable tourism. The environmental footprint of traveling in Thailand is promoted through initiatives such as the Thailand Tourism Awards and the Krabi Prototype project, which aim to make tourism more environmentally friendly. More and more accommodations are adopting sustainable concepts, while the country attracts around 30 million tourists every year, who should have a prior respect for nature and culture in order to enjoy the breathtaking beaches and sights. Thailand Magazine describes how ecotourism promotes environmentally conscious travel and supports the local economy.
Together against climate change
In addition to progress in the tourism sector, the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) aims to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. With a comprehensive strategy that includes reforestation projects and the expansion of renewable energies, EGAT wants to make a sustainable contribution to combating climate change. A project covering over 1 million rai (approximately 1,600 km²) aims to help create a carbon-free future. EGAT has thus shown a strong commitment to environmental protection.
The path to a greener future is diverse. Only by acting responsibly and working together can we preserve the beauty of Thailand. Tourists are encouraged to do their part by choosing eco-friendly accommodation, supporting local restaurants and avoiding single-use plastic. This means that staying in this magnificent country is not only a pleasure, but also a valuable support for the environment and local communities.
