Thailand declares poker a sport: a boom for the gambling industry!
A lot is happening in the field of sport in Thailand. The Sports Authority of Thailand (SAT) has officially recognized poker as a sport, a so-called “brain sport” comparable to chess. This was decided on July 23, 2025 during a meeting led by Deputy Prime Minister Suriya Juangroongruangkit. This landmark decision could place Thailand among those countries that see poker as a game of skill and strategy, and thus serve as a role model for other nations in the region. Tabularasa Magazine highlights that this recognition comes after years of discussions between sports associations, economic operators and tourism experts.
The legislation stipulates that poker is clearly differentiated from gambling in order to avoid possible gambling addiction problems. According to SAT Governor Kongsak Yodmanee, poker requires strategic thinking, psychological control and emotional intelligence. The government wants to promote poker as an intellectual challenge and has announced it will launch a national dealer certification program that has already trained 100 professionals. In addition, to strengthen the sector, there are plans to establish official poker associations and hold a national poker tournament from 2026. World Poker Federation sees these steps as a significant step forward for the global status of poker.
A new chapter for poker in Thailand
The Thai government has big plans. In addition to the immediate recognition as a brain teaser, there is the ambition to develop Thailand into an international center for poker tournaments. Industry analysts estimate that around 120 million euros could flow into the country annually through poker events and the associated sports tourism sector. The interest in online poker should not be underestimated, as over 9 million people in Southeast Asia regularly use online poker platforms. Weekly flash reports that Thailand plans to establish an online poker licensing model similar to that of the Philippines.
There are over 60 major poker tournaments planned in Thailand next year, an increase of around 100% compared to 2019. This illustrates the immense potential that lies on the sporting field here. Fascinated by the economic opportunities, the hotel, catering and event industries will also benefit from this boom. Over 1.5 million people interested in sports travel to Thailand every year, which further reinforces the idea of a sports tourism boom.
Economic prospects at hand
The new official recognition of poker will also help create a transparent and fair environment for the sport. Not only the sport itself is supported, but also the associated infrastructure. The government estimates that international poker events create around 8,000 jobs in various sectors. The creation of training programs for dealers and event organizers demonstrates the desire to strengthen poker as a valuable discipline in sport and society.
However, critics express concerns about whether the separation between poker as a sport and gambling will be successful. The SAT assures that clear guidelines will ensure the promotion of purely sporting events. The next few years will determine whether Thailand can actually become a global poker center or whether the project will stall. Interest in this development will certainly remain high.
