Thailand's Claudio Cerquetti impresses at the Skål Congress for Sustainable Tourism!

The event took place in September 2025 Skål International World Congress in the magical city of Cusco, Peru. Presented at this important meetingClaudio Cerquetti, a passionate member of Skål International Koh Samui since 2004, Thailand and has been a strong advocate for the issue of sustainable tourism.

Skål International is a global network for tourism professionals that counts more than 300 clubs in almost 100 countries. Cerquetti came with a clear mission: to put Thailand in the spotlight as a sustainable travel destination. He distributed 200 specially designed postcards to club presidents and their teams to promote the beauties of Thailand. He presented the country's tourist highlights as well as environmentally friendly initiatives in exhibitions.

Sustainability in focus

A central concern of the event was the promotion of responsible tourism. Not only did Cerquetti organize a session highlighting the importance of sustainability in Thailand's tourism sector, but he also highlighted the beauty of Thailand's national parks and wildlife sanctuaries. His presentation highlighted the various sustainable accommodation options the country has to offer.

The congress aroused great interest: over 106 submissions for the Sustainable Tourism Awards were submitted from more than 30 countries, demonstrating the growing commitment to sustainable tourism. Cerquetti has also won awards for sustainable hotels in India, such as ITC Maurya in Delhi and ITC Royal Bengal in Kolkata, that implemented the practices of his own company, CONTINEWM®.

The look into the future

The President of Skål International Thailand,Wolfgang Grimm, was also present and emphasized the importance of intensive interaction between people and nature. According to him, in the post-Covid-19 world, it is crucial to promote dialogue for sustainable solutions and manage the turbulence of overtourism. Grimm calls for a restart of the tourism industry so that warning lessons from the pandemic are not forgotten.

He emphasizes that instead of marketing strategies that rely only on discounts, there should be an increased focus on community engagement and small, sustainable activities. For example, the project to promote urban agriculture in urban areas could help improve the environment and transform unused land into fertile gardens.

In summary, Cerquetti and Grimm have left a lasting impression with their initiatives and commitment. The future of sustainable tourism in Thailand and beyond will be significantly shaped by the lessons and communication during the congress. It is up to all of us to set the course for a more environmentally friendly future.

Skål International reiterated its commitment to sustainable tourism and emphasizes supporting local communities to reduce the environmental footprint.
